What will today be remembered for? January 19, 2020?
On this day in 1903, a new bicycle race to be called the "Tour de France" was announced. Ironically, 110 years later on January 19, 2013, Lance Armstrong admitted to doping in all seven of his Tour de France victories. (source: https://www.onthisday.com/events/january/19)
So, to put things in perspective, starting a little meat-free blog in my little corner of the universe seems a little insignificant. But here goes anyway.
I am (rapidly) approaching 44 years old. I share my home with a (nearly) 5-year-old and a spouse in the last year of his 4th decade. Seems like the perfect time for us to embrace a more planet-friendly, plant-full lifestyle.
I will eat (almost) anything. By nature, as you would expect, the upcoming kindergartner most prefers chips (blue and red triangles to be precise), but eats a healthy balance of whatever I can manage to put on the table. The spouse is the problematic eater. He'll be the big challenge as he is convinced eating vegetarian means eating a mix of lettuce, Clif/Fiber One bars, and a multi-vitamin. Not to mention I haven't checked the ingredients yet on said meal/snack bars to assure they even have a plant-based profile. I feel like it's going to be a lot of work to convert him... work that is not rewarding or appreciated by him, so likely not worth the effort.
That said, my blog will be about trying to feed a family of three meat-eaters a vegetarian (moving toward vegan) menu!
Today, we made a trip to the local closeout store and racked up a stack of vegetarian/vegan/raw cookbooks. I have a few in storage (did I mention we are in the middle of a move - and by middle I mean maybe close to a move but our reno is not done but should be and might be any day now but isn't?) and hope to use these to start to form a meal plan. I already prep a keto-friendly meal for coworkers on Sunday to have for Monday lunch - that might be a challenge to maintain, but hopefully I can begin to incorporate veg-friendly meals there, too!
I expect resistance. I expect people will think it's not a good idea to raise a vegetarian kid. I expect there will be times when convenience wins out over preparation. But I expect I'll feel better - about myself, my health, my weight, my family - as I make the changes.
January 19, 2020, will thankfully not be as momentous as this date in 1915 when, during World War I, 4 people in Norfolk were killed in the 1st German Zeppelin air raid attack on the United Kingdom. (source: https://www.onthisday.com/events/january/19) However, I'm about to drop a bomb of my own on the foods we eat in this house. And I invite you to follow along, even consider trying it, too. One day at a time, okay?
